We Decided to Sell our House – to Build Our Dream Home

I did something crazy. It was totally out of my character. I decided on a whim that I want to sell our house. We bought this house less than 2 years ago. It was new construction. I work in real estate so I understand the business and where interest rates are going. After running the numbers and consulting with my boss, I had my mind made up. But I still had to bring the idea to my husband.

We were eating dinner on a Thursday night. I casually mentioned that my boss and I had talked about selling our house. John almost swallowed his fork. I presented him with all the facts. He asked me “What did you do with my wife?” He went on to explain that he never thought in a million years, me the tight wad, would want to sell our house and buy a more expensive one.

John and I talked more throughout that evening about the what ifs. If we are going to move, it has to be new construction and it has to make financial sense. I have been saying for months that by the time my boys are in high school that I want them in a different school district. My boss broke it down perfectly for me. He said with the way interest rates are going, you will never make up the difference with the equity in your home in the time frame you are thinking of moving. We have more buying power today than we will in four years.

The next day we went to look at a neighborhood and the model home. We both fell in love. We made an appointment for Saturday to price it out and see if we could actually make it work. I left the appointment feeling very excited, but very apprehensive. There are so many pieces to this puzzle. We spent hours Saturday night going over our finances. We came to the conclusion that we could actually make it work. Sunday morning we went in and signed a contract on a new home!

That was the easy part. Telling the boys was the hard one. This will be Nathan’s fourth move. He is 9. And it will be Logan’s third. He’s 7. Nathan’s biggest question was why are we moving again when we just moved two years ago. It is hard to explain to a child that your decision will better their future. He only sees today, the here and now. It’s going to be a rough next 6 months but I just know it’s all going to work out in the end.

So now the real fun begins. I’ve got a house to list in two weeks. My to do list is a mile long. I think the most important part is to keep a positive attitude. I want my boys to know that this is a happy time in our lives.  All the stress will be worth it in the end because we are building our forever home.

That’s awesome! We also decided on a whim to sell and build. Our basement is currently being finished right now and then framing will hopefully begin soon. We are building in Hunters Run so my son will have to change schools. It’s so hard to justify them changing friends for a better life down the road. ☺️
